 Our Ancestors

Written April 25, 1989 by Willie Jane Moore

The Coles:

[A note in the margin: Charlie Cole, Monroe Cole Jr., William’s half brother deceased. Charlie Cole was a School Teacher.]

Anne Cole Great Geat Gandmother,
Monroe Cole Great Grand Dad,
William Carter Cole Grand Dad,
Laura Lett Great Gand Mother,
Robert Williams Great great Granddad,
Harriet Williams Great Great Grandmother.

Robert and Harriet Williams were slaves in Culpepper Virginia they were sold to a family in Tennessee north of Kenton. Robert Williams was what we would now call a veterinarian now he cared for the animals if a baby was expected. At night, he slept in the barn. Harriet was small in stature not much over 4ft. tall she didn’t sell too well on the block but she was an excellent cook and housekeeper and for that reason she was sold along with Robert otherwise they would have been separated. They belonged to the Carter family in Virginia but were sold to the Williams in Tennessee. Culpepper sent William C. Cole maps and yearbooks of Culpepper Virginia. Kizzie has them in Saint Louis.

William Carter Cole and Sophie Anne Brown were married February 22, 1905 to this union were born: (Sophie and William are buried in Rosson cemetery)
Louise, Elouise (deceased July 1, 1980), Josie L., Willie J., Helen, Kizzie, and William L. (deceased May, 1935). William and Sophie worked for the Shatz family in Kenton for 40 years before retirement. William worked at the produce house. He candled eggs, and bought and sold poultry.

The Browns: Sophie’s parents Robert Brown West Point, Mississippi was a blacksmith died in West Point Mississippi. Kizzie Brown born in West Point Mississippi died in Tennessee and is buried in Rosson cemetery.

James (Uncle Jim) brown born in West Point Mississippi worked for the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, was transferred from Kenton to Illinois, Cashe, Illinois, later to Tamms. He died in 1947 and was buried in Illinois where he worked until .. (James had eight children and all are deceased now) James Raised Josie and Sophie after their mother died both girls married. Your grandmother, Ella Bolton Moore was born in Indiana she called it Indian Territory she was buried in Detroit I made one for copy of our family and sending you one. I don’t know too much about Al’s family.

Elsa Moore lived in Lebanon the last I heard. She was your uncle Gilbert’s daughter.

The Smiths - Siddie Smith sister of Ella Moore her children are Mary Smith Detroit Bessie Shaw Nashville Tennessee, Iloda Smith Nashville Tennessee, Albert Shaw Detroit, Williams Shaw, Bernie Shaw. Iloda had two daughters Iloda Albertine, and Betty (Betty crossed over) in Detroit.

Ernestine’s father James Harvell was a nephew of Ella Moore of Terre Haute (a note that John Gilbert Moore Sr. was named for Uncle Gilbert Moore and that James Harvell had a Hot Tamales business in Terre Haute in his home at 2319 Street. Then it says something about Jennie?)
